June 15, 2015

On June 11 (Thu), a briefing session and farewell party for four students from Chung Chi College were held. For three weeks, they had done various activities through ICU's Service Learning Center. They had worked as a volunteer at facilities for the elderly, and elementary and middle schools of Mitaka, and they had also engaged in farm work and community activities during their stay at the Asian Rural Institute Rural Leaders Training Center located in Nasushiobara (Tochigi pref.).

At the briefing session, students mainly talked about what they learned from meeting people. The students told of the valuable things they gained from the program. "At first, I thought communicating over the language barrier would be difficult, but I came to understand that nonverbal communication such as smiling, attitude, and body language are more crucial to communication." "Experiencing first hand that it is possible to connect with people without the understanding of each other's languages was the biggest harvest of these activities" "I was able to gain valuable experience and socializing opportunities you would not get by just traveling."

Additionally, the students said they realized anew the importance of treasuring every meeting as a once-in-lifetime experience through their stay at ICU, and cheered the ICU students who were attending the session by saying, "Please do your best, we are cheering for you (ganbattekudasai)" in Japanese.

After the briefing session, a farewell party was held at Alumni House, and students of Chung Chi College and ICU had a pleasurable time socializing with one another.
